Xbox said the limits were due to the rising cost of cloud gaming, and would allow it to invest more in its performance

Xbox has announced that it will impose monthly caps on cloud gaming for Game Pass subscribers, with the restrictions taking effect in November. Subscribers to the £16.99 Ultimate tier will be able to stream games for up to 15 hours each month before needing to purchase additional cloud playtime. The Premium tier will receive a limit of 10 hours, while the Essential tier will be restricted to 5 hours per month. Xbox stated that the limits are necessary because of the increasing cost of providing cloud gaming services and will allow the company to “continue to invest” in the service’s “reliability and performance.” The publisher noted that only about 4 % of Game Pass users currently make use of its cloud gaming offering. A recent Wall Street Journal article reported that Game Pass has 30 million subscribers, which suggests that roughly 1.2 million players could be impacted by the new caps. Reaction on social media was mixed. One commenter on X wrote, “This is simply a beauteous atrocious change, hopefully Xbox adds an other zero connected the extremity origin 15hrs is abysmal. 30 minutes a day, really?” Jez Corden of Windows Central told the BBC that the announcement showed that “absolutely thing is harmless from the AI-driven constituent crisis,” but he added that it also highlighted “where Microsoft's priorities are.” He further observed, “For them to proceed to connection unlimited entree to Microsoft Copilot [AI] for escaped but restrict paid unreality gaming successful this mode shows immoderate contradiction,” noting that both cloud gaming and AI rely on the same data‑centre infrastructure. According to an Xbox blog post, beginning in November users will be able to access the company’s cloud gaming feature without a Game Pass subscription by purchasing “cloud playtime hours” directly from the Xbox store. The price for those additional hours has not been disclosed.
