Scientists say the record-breaking journey by three brothers offers hope wildlife can survive growing pressures.

Three African wild dogs completed a roughly 2,500‑mile trek across the continent in search of a mate, but one of the trio became trapped in a snare before the journey’s end. The animals, described as sisters in the original account, are among Africa’s rarest predators, with only about 6,000 individuals remaining in the wild. They live in highly social packs, hunt cooperatively and are known for extensive roaming as they seek new territory and breeding opportunities with other groups. Because they cannot breed within the pack into which they are born, individuals either remain and may eventually inherit their natal group or disperse at age two or three to find a mate elsewhere. The males covered approximately 260 miles in a straight line over eight months, yet their actual path amounted to roughly ten times that distance as they navigated a fragmented landscape. Such movements are classified as dispersals—one‑way travels undertaken to locate a mate—a behavior derived from seasonal migrations where animals shift back and forth in pursuit of food or habitat. According to the UN Convention on Migratory Species, Africa’s longest recorded migrations involve wildebeest moving seasonally between Tanzania and Kenya in search of grazing and water, covering more than 400 miles. Globally, caribou perform the longest single‑on‑shore migrations of any mammal, traveling 839 miles on a round trip, while grey wolves have been logged traveling more than 4,350 miles over a year. Equally notable was the route the wild dogs took through Zambia. They moved between wildlife strongholds, deliberately skirting major human obstacles including the capital city, Lusaka, and expansive developed commercial zones. The findings indicate that wild dog populations across eastern and southern Africa may retain greater connectivity than conservationists had previously assumed. Professor Scott Creel of Montana State University, the paper’s lead author who has studied African wild dogs since 1991, said the results offer cautious optimism. “It's plausible to judge that each large wild dog population in east and southern Africa, other than fenced ones, are possibly connected,” he said. He added, however, that in conservation “the glass is half empty and the glass is half full,” underscoring the persistent threat posed by poaching snares poaching snares. While the three male dogs succeeded in completing their remarkable trek, two of the three females perished. Researchers observed that surviving pack members repeatedly returned to the same location, a pattern that often signals the death of a companion. The study, published in the journal Ecology, reinforces calls to create strips of natural land outside protected areas that link isolated wildlife habitats fragmented by roads, towns or farms. Bruce Ellender, a co‑author and Kafue Conservation manager for The Nature Conservancy, emphasized that species ranging over vast territories—such as wild dogs and elephants—require connected landscapes to persist into the future. “We can't view these protected areas as islands and expect them to be functional in the long term, we need to think much broader than that,” he said.
