Wife charged with murder after police question account of masked attackers

Naima Ahmadi, 53, was arrested Thursday and charged with open murder in the death of her husband, 77-year-old Ekufe Ebrutu, at their apartment on the 6700 block of Del Rey Avenue. Ahmadi called police for help that morning, telling officers she and her husband had been attacked by two knife-wielding masked burglars two days earlier.

Police said her story did not align with evidence gathered during the investigation. A neighbor reported seeing Ebrutu alive in his garage rummaging through a filing cabinet a day after Ahmadi said the attack occurred. Video surveillance from another neighbor showed no one arriving at or leaving the apartment during the reported time of the intrusion.

According to the arrest report, Ahmadi told police she lost consciousness for nearly two days after the intruders cut her, while Ebrutu bled to death. She suffered minor cuts to her neck, abdomen, and parallel cuts on her wrist, which police said were inconsistent with her account and consistent with a suicide attempt. She was admitted to a hospital for psychiatric observation.

Ebrutu had been stabbed in the front center of his neck, his chest, and his abdomen, where his intestines were exposed. Police described Ahmadi's injuries as "much less severe than" her husband's. Detectives confronted Ahmadi about the nature of her wounds, but the report states she continued to insist they were not self-inflicted and that they were "hurt badly" by the suspects.

Ahmadi is being held without bail. Court records indicate she is due in court again in November for a hearing to discuss a possible plea deal.
