UNLV sophomore center Tyrin Jones played his entire freshman season with a torn left labrum suffered in August 2025, wearing a compression sleeve while averaging 11.9 points, five rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. He underwent surgery in April and chose to return to the Runnin' Rebels rather than enter the transfer portal.
Jones said the coaching staff was a major factor in his decision to stay. "After surgery, I wanted to be around people who knew me for myself and not just as a basketball player," he said. The Las Vegas native, who attended Arbor View High School before transferring to Layton Christian Academy in Utah, added that he knows the coaches trust him to be a leader and help build team chemistry.
Coach Josh Pastner called Jones a "cultural warrior" whose greatest attribute extends beyond his shot-blocking ability. "He's a tremendous prospect, but a cultural warrior for our program, for the city, for the team. He's just a high-level dude," Pastner said. The coach emphasized allowing Jones to play with creativity and instincts while maintaining fundamental discipline.
Jones acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly at the free-throw line where he shot 49 percent on a team-high 168 attempts last season. "Obviously, I have to shoot my free throws better, and I've been working hard also on my outside shot," he said. "Just continue to be a leader. I'm only in my second year, but I need to bring that energy every day."
