All UK nations have experienced recent heatwave conditions but in southern England, the heatwave has now continued for 13 days. Sarah Keith-Lucas looks at how unusual this spell of heat is, and when we might see it easing.

This year is already shaping up to be a record‑breaking one for weather in the United Kingdom, having exceeded the monthly temperature records for May and June by more than 2 degrees. It marks the third heatwave of 2026. At the same stage last year, the country had also just recorded its third heatwave of 2025. In contrast, during July 2025 several locations in southern England experienced four straight days with temperatures above 30°C.
