Two right‑backs in midfield – are Chelsea short despite £349m spent?
The absence of midfielder Moises Caicedo has left Chelsea exposed after a summer in which the club spent roughly £349million on transfers. Caicedo, the Ecuadorian international, withdrew from the squad with an undisclosed injury shortly after coming on as a substitute against Brighton, lasting only 11 minutes before being withdrawn.
Head coach Alonso acknowledged the situation, stating, “Not longer term, but it is astir assessing the risk. Probably past week we brought him backmost excessively aboriginal and I don't privation to marque the aforesaid mistake again.” He added that the club is evaluating the risk of rushing the player back too soon.
Caicedo had missed just two matches over the previous three seasons due to suspension, illness or minor knocks, making his current absence notable. It remains unclear whether Chelsea had reservations about his fitness when pursuing other midfielders before the transfer deadline.
Monaco withdrew its £47million offer for Lamine Camara at the last minute, prompting frustration at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had also seen bids of up to £64million for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott rejected earlier in the summer, and a move for France international Manu Kone was blocked after Roma’s head coach Gian Piero Gasperini intervened.
The club said it pursued Camara because of a market opportunity, expressed satisfaction with its summer business and retained confidence in its existing options. This statement came despite Chelsea selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a British‑record £125million on deadline day without securing a direct replacement.
With Caicedo sidelined, he joins England international Jordan Henderson on the treatment table; Henderson continues to recover from a fractured leg sustained after falling into an advertising hoarding while an unused substitute at the World Cup.
Natural midfielder Valentin Barco, who arrived from Strasbourg in the summer, has been overlooked in favour of Gusto in all three of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures. Gusto’s deployment in midfield coincided with Chelsea recording just 25.6percent possession in their 4‑3 victory over Brighton – the lowest figure since records began in the 2003‑04 season.
Alonso suggested that, should all midfield options be fit and Caicedo’s injury prove minor, the squad could manage with five midfielders in a week without midweek European competition. Yet after conceding seven goals in three opening matches, he conceded, “we privation to beryllium tighter.”
