Traitors star Joe Marler to become BBC's first celebrity Gladiator

Former England rugby international Joe Marler is set to become the BBC’s first celebrity Gladiator. The 36‑year‑old, who also competed in the inaugural series of Celebrity Traitors, will compete under the name “Mauler” when the fourth series of Gladiators launches in 2027. In an Instagram video filmed inside the Gladiators dressing room, Marler declared, “Mauler will spot you now,” announcing his participation. The BBC confirmed that Marler’s debut will consist of “special appearances packed with power, property and plentifulness of surprises.” Filming for the upcoming series is already underway in Sheffield, the corporation said in a statement. Describing Marler, the BBC added, “Known for his uncompromising style of play and larger-than-life sense of humour, Joe has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most entertaining sporting personalities. Now, he's taking on an entirely new challenge as he joins the ranks of the Gladiators, bringing his trademark physicality and competitive tone to one of television's toughest arenas.” Marler will face fellow Gladiators such as Nitro, Viper, Diamond and Sabre in the arena when the show returns next year. Originally a hit on ITV during the 1990s, Gladiators paired members of the public with elite athletes, each sporting a distinct on‑screen persona. The format was revived by Sky for a single series in 2008 before the current iteration premiered on BBC One in 2024, quickly becoming a ratings success. A separate celebrity spin‑off is also in development, featuring contestants including presenter AJ Odudu, comedian Sara Pascoe, podcaster Chris Ramsey and social‑media personality George Clarke.
