The Office actress Lucy Davis says she has 'incurable' cancer

Lucy Davis, who portrayed Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of *The Office*, has disclosed that she is living with "incurable" breast cancer. The 53‑year‑old actress, daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, said she received a stage 4 breast‑cancer diagnosis a year‑and‑half ago. The disease has metastasized to her bones, specifically her spine, left hip and ribs. She explained that the cancer is incurable and too advanced for chemotherapy. In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Davis wrote: "I wanted to share something with you all that I've kept to myself for a while but for various reasons would like to share now." She continued: "A year‑and‑half ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, which has metastasized to my bones. Specifically to my spine, left hip and my ribs. The cancer is incurable, and too advanced for chemo." Describing the initial symptom, she said: "The first lump that I felt, wasn't a 'lump' as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn’t bother getting it checked. So I guess I'm saying don’t ignore anything – get everything checked out." Davis added: "As of now, I'm trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as enjoyable a way as I possibly can. I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there's a lot I have learned from it, and I'm grateful for that." She also stated: "I'm not frightened of whatever comes next. I'm at peace with it. I'll see my [late dog] Gracie sooner than expected, and for me, leaving my physical assemblage just means going home. Any and all grieving is for my family; it's far harder for them than for me." Under the subheadline “Cancer asks a lot from us,” the article notes that Birmingham‑born Davis played receptionist Dawn, the love interest of Tim Canterbury, portrayed by Martin Freeman in Ricky Gervais’s TV‑drama classic. After *The Office*, Davis appeared as Dianne in the 2004 comedy‑horror film *Shaun of the Dead* and as Etta Candy in the 2017 film *Wonder Woman*, as well as Hilda Spellman in the Netflix series *The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina*. Most recently she played Eva in the Disney Channel’s live‑action drama series *The Villains of Valley View*. Her Instagram post, which featured a video of her reciting a poem while ringing a doorbell in a hospital, included her intention to continue supporting animal‑rights work, which she described as “so important to me.” She said: "I still would like to keep working. I'm perfectly capable to do so, and acting is one of the biggest joys in my life." Addressing others facing similar challenges, Davis concluded: "For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well. Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we each get to do it however we choose."
