Seattle Seahawks have opted not to sign running back Joe Mixon after he completed a workout and physical with the club, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Mixon had been expected to join Seattle’s practice squad following an agreement reached on Monday, but the arrangement was conditional on his passing the medical examination. He remains a free agent, and the team has not disclosed the reason for the reversal.
The decision arrived fewer than 24 hours after reports indicated Seattle intended to add the 30‑year‑old Mixon to alleviate a running‑back shortage. Rookie Jadarian Price, the franchise’s first‑round selection, was placed on injured reserve with a chest injury, while Zach Charbonnet remains sidelined as he continues his rehabilitation from an ACL injury. Coach Mike Macdonald confirmed Monday that Mixon had worked out for the squad and said, “We’re down runners. We request moving backs. He’s a bully moving back.”
Mixon has not seen game action since the 2024 season, during which he rushed for 1,016 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in 14 appearances for the Houston Texans, earning his second Pro Bowl honor. He sat out the entire 2025 campaign after sustaining a foot injury and was released by Houston in March. Across eight NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and Texans, Mixon has accumulated 7,428 rushing yards and 60 rushing touchdowns, along with 2,448 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns.
With Mixon no longer headed to Seattle, the Seahawks will continue to rely on Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and Velus Jones Jr. The club also added running back Robert Henry Jr. from the Washington Commanders’ practice squad, providing another option as Seattle prepares for its upcoming matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. Charbonnet has resumed practicing but is not expected to play on Sunday.
