Britain's George Russell will start from the back of the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix after incurring a power‑unit penalty stemming from the Bahrain Grand Prix held in Malaysia last Sunday.
The 28‑year‑old had qualified eighth but was running in third place, on course for a podium finish, when an engine failure forced his retirement with five laps remaining.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that Russell must fit a new power unit this weekend, which puts him over the allowance on several components and triggers the Singapore sanction.
Russell’s retirement promoted Kimi Antonelli, who finished second behind Max Verstappen in Bahrain, to a significant boost in the championship standings; the Italian now leads his Mercedes teammate by 84 points.
With six or possibly seven races left—contingent on whether the series secures the necessary assurances for Qatar and Abu Dhabi amid the ongoing Middle‑East situation—the penalty adds to a season of mechanical woes for Russell.
Wolff remarked, "[Russell's penalty] is peculiarly frustrating fixed the mode helium drove past play and the effect helium deserved to beryllium warring for," said Wolff.
He added, "Unfortunately, these things are portion of the athletics and our absorption present is connected giving him the champion imaginable car and opportunities to combat backmost done the field."
Reflecting on the recent troubles, Wolff stated, "We person spent the days since [last Sunday] moving hard to recognize wherefore our show was not wherever it should person been," Wolff added.
He noted, "Singapore gives america an contiguous accidental to proceed that work."
And concluded, "We request to support learning and people the strongest effect we tin with some cars."
Antonelli’s victory at the Italian Grand Prix last week, earned after a comparable penalty, underscores the latest setback in a string of frustrating mechanical issues for Russell, who won the Singapore race in 2023.
Although extra points are available this weekend as Singapore stages the season’s sixth and final sprint event, Russell’s penalty applies only to the Grand Prix on Sunday and not to the Saturday sprint.
