Ryan Garcia will defend his WBC welterweight championship on the Mexican Independence Day weekend, Sept. 12, at T‑Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, according to an announcement made Wednesday morning by Zuffa boxing president Dana White.
The Victorville, California native, now 27, captured the belt from Mario Barrios in February at the same venue with a dominant decision that included a first‑round knockdown.
His opponent, Conor Benn, is a 29‑year‑old Briton and the son of British boxing legend Nigel Benn. Benn holds the WBC’s top welterweight contender ranking and is seeking his first world title. He enters the bout with a record of 25‑1, 14 knockouts, most recently defeating former 140‑pound champion Regis Prograis at 150 pounds after two middleweight fights versus Chris Eubank Jr. Benn has not competed at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds since 2022.
Garcia, who carries a record of 25‑2 with 20 knockouts, is regarded as one of boxing’s biggest draws. Mexican Independence Day cards have traditionally been headlined by Canelo Alvarez, who headlined the holiday weekend last year at Allegiant Stadium before losing his undisputed middleweight title to Terence Crawford. Alvarez has also headlined Mexican Independence Day bouts in Las Vegas against Edgar Berlanga (2024), Gennady Golovkin (2022, 2018, 2017) and Floyd Mayweather (2013). This year Alvarez is slated to face Christian Mbilli for the WBC middleweight title, although a date for that matchup—originally set for Sept. 12 in Saudi Arabia—has not been finalized.
Promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia is appearing on a Las Vegas card for the third time, having lost to Gervonta Davis in their 2023 encounter at T‑Mobile Arena. The Benn fight marks the second welterweight title bout staged locally within a three‑week span; the first is WBA champion Rolando Romero’s defense scheduled for Aug. 22 against Teofimo Lopez, also set for T‑Mobile Arena.
Romero claimed the interim version of his title in May with a decision victory over Garcia in New York.
