The Las Vegas Raiders released wide receiver Cody White on Tuesday, ending the early-season breakout of a player who had become a fan favorite. White caught three touchdown passes on three receptions during a two-game stretch against the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints, but managed just one catch for four yards on three targets over the past three weeks.
The 27-year-old arrived this offseason primarily as a special teams contributor with 11 career catches for 169 yards and one touchdown over parts of five seasons. He eclipsed those career marks quickly and drew attention for chasing down Miami returner Jaylen Wright on a kickoff return in the season opener to prevent a touchdown.
White's departure clears a roster spot for tight end Carter Runyon, who was activated from injured reserve. Runyon had been sidelined since suffering a foot injury during training camp.
The move comes as the Raiders attempt to build momentum after snapping a four-game losing streak with a win over the New York Jets, putting them in playoff consideration ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
