Mater East rolled to a 56-6 home victory over Cadence on Friday in the 4A Southern Region semifinals, advancing to the regional final against Sloan Canyon. The top-seeded Knights (8-3) led 42-0 at halftime against the winless fourth-seeded Cougars (0-10-1) and finished with 278 offensive yards.
Kevin-Keith Tindimwebwa caught two touchdown passes for Mater East, which also got scoring receptions from Jaxon Sharp and S’Marion Coleman. James Monaghan, Ra’jahn Butler and Portland Yandall shared quarterback duties and combined for four touchdown passes. Marcus Williams scored on a 65-yard run on the Knights’ second play, and Idrees Davis and Justin McCullah added rushing touchdowns.
Cadence managed negative yardage for the game but scored in the fourth quarter when Mavetrick Turner caught a pass from Braxton Schiess, broke a tackle and reached the end zone with 8:58 remaining on the running clock. The Cougars benefited from numerous Mater East penalties, including repeated offside calls and personal fouls.
The Knights committed 18 of the game’s 28 penalties, a concern for coach Tim Hough heading into the final. “We jumped offside a lot,” Hough said. “We have to clean that up.” He added that the team will need to be more disciplined next week, though he praised the special teams and tackling.
Mater East will host Sloan Canyon at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 for the 4A Southern Region championship. The Knights won the regular-season meeting with Cadence 62-0 in October.
