The cost of the Iran war to American taxpayers has reached an estimated $47.1 billion, according to a Pentagon estimate provided to Congress and obtained by The Associated Press. The figure, current as of Oct. 16, reflects a $3.5 billion increase since early September, when the tally stood at about $43.6 billion. The conflict, launched in late February by the United States and Israel, has entered its eighth month despite initial promises it would last only weeks.
The growing expense has become a flashpoint in the midterm elections, with voters deciding Tuesday which party controls Congress for the remainder of President Donald Trump's term. An AP-NORC poll found most voters want Congress to prioritize ending the war. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "Trump and his ego led us into this war with no plan, no authority, and no exit strategy. Senate Democrats will continue to do everything in our power to end this disaster of a war and stop the costs, chaos, and corruption seeping from the White House."
The bulk of the spending, about $29 billion, covers replacing munitions, particularly defensive missile interceptors used by Patriot and THAAD systems. Operational costs total roughly $11.9 billion, while equipment losses account for $6 billion. The Air Force has incurred $7.6 billion in costs, the Army more than $2 billion, and the Navy $1.45 billion — a notable drop from the $2.2 billion reported in September. The Navy and Central Command referred questions about the decrease to the Pentagon, which did not immediately respond.
The White House is seeking a $95 billion funding package to support the war and other priorities, alongside a historic $1.5 trillion military budget proposal. President Trump has left open the possibility of renewed strikes after the midterms and is sending additional military resources to the region. Democrats have attempted to end the conflict through legislation that has failed in the Republican-controlled Congress.
