How important is Community Shield to a team's season?

Since the Premier League's inception in 1992-93, only eight of the 34 teams that have won the Charity or Community Shield have gone on to claim the league title in the same season. Five of those instances occurred within a six‑year span from 2005 to 2010. Manchester City achieved the feat most recently in 2019; prior to that, Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United won both the Shield and the league in 2011. In the last 15 Shield victories, just one winner has subsequently become league champion. Conversely, teams that have lost the Shield have collected more league titles overall—10 since 1992, including Manchester City’s three‑year run from 2021 to 2023. Last season, Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool in the Shield match, finished 15th in the league, yet captured the Conference League, while Liverpool ended the campaign in fifth place. Approximately 47 percent (16 of 34) of upcoming Premier League champions had not participated in the Shield the previous year, a pattern exemplified by Arsenal’s projected 2025‑26 season. Meanwhile, Shield victors have finished above their Shield‑losing counterparts in 53 percent (18 of 34) of seasons. On ten occasions the two Shield contestants have occupied the top two league positions, with the Shield winner finishing first and the loser runner‑up on four of those occasions.
