First ‘pounds for pylons’ energy bill discount sites revealed Households living within 1,600 ft (500 m) of 43 transmission projects across Britain will receive a £250 yearly discount on their energy bills for up to 10 years under the measure sometimes dubbed “pounds for pylons,” the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has confirmed. UK ministers say replacing and upgrading decades‑old infrastructure is crucial for distributing renewable power and improving energy security. Critics argue the payments are a meagre compensation for the impact on homes, neighbourhoods and the environment. About two‑thirds of the projects are located in Scotland, aimed at supporting the fast‑growing onshore wind sector. Additional upgrades are planned elsewhere, including areas north of London, East Anglia, the Midlands and North Wales. UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks described grid upgrades as “a crucial part of how we deliver secure, homegrown energy and unlock economic growth across the country.” He added: “It is simply a tiny of national renewal – upgrading what was built mostly in the 1960s for the modern economy and is our way of bringing down energy bills for households across the country.” Shanks continued: “It’s crucial we build again as a nation and we are determined those communities which host pylons should benefit, which is why we’re bringing down the energy bills of those hosting this crucial national infrastructure.” The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero noted that Britain’s grid was mostly designed for an era when power came from coal and gas‑fired stations and now requires large upgrades to handle growing amounts of renewable energy. Ministers warned that insufficient capacity means some wind farms are occasionally paid to power down because the grid cannot transport the electricity to where it is needed. To fund the scheme, approximately 80p a year will be added to each energy bill. Most qualifying households will receive the discount automatically on their bill every six months; customers with commercial meters may need to apply. The first payments are expected to start early next year, when eligible households will receive further details from their supplier or the regulator Ofgem. An appraisal carried out earlier this year estimated that between 120,000 and 160,000 households could eventually receive the discounts as more projects are rolled out. Rural campaign groups contend it is impossible to assign a monetary value to the loss of landscape, and some residents near planned projects say the offered amount is an insult. Kate Matthews of the Save Our Mearns campaign group, which opposes upgraded pylons in north‑east Scotland including the Kintore to Tealing scheme, called the discount strategy an insult. She stated: “£2,500 off energy bills over 10 years is simply a slap in the face for residents facing ruined businesses and unsellable homes.” Matthews added: “This government is either massively out of touch or is showing their contempt for affected residents and energy consumers.” She said the plans have already caused “mental anguish” for residents who now face a decade of disruption that would bring noise, road closures and heavy traffic. “Then a lifetime of pylons impacting on their environment, agriculture, tourism, property values, physical and visual amenity to name a few,” she remarked. Pylon heights will vary by location and purpose; in north‑east Scotland some of the proposed lattice structures are about 187 ft (57 m) tall. They would be comparable in scale to the already upgraded Beauly‑to‑Denny line, where pylons range from 138 ft (42 m) to 213 ft (65 m). Many projects involve a mix of underground and pylon‑supported cables, together with sub‑stations, converter stations and other transmission equipment. Campaigners have urged that larger sections of the network be placed underground. National Grid and transmission companies counter that undergrounding would be significantly more expensive and would complicate repair work.
