Mendoza has been accurate in training camp practices while with the second team as the Raiders prepare him for a role early on behind Kirk Cousins.

Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza said he is embracing a supporting role behind starter Kirk Cousins, two days into training camp. Speaking Thursday at the Intermountain Health Performance Center, the No. 1 draft pick stated, “I’m just trying to do my part and focus on the next rep and do everything that I possibly can to prepare myself to be the best asset I can for my team and whatever decision is made at the end, that’s great. I’m all for it. I just want the team to win. That’s where I’m at.” Mendoza looked sharp in practice, directing the second‑team offense and delivering passes downfield with velocity and accuracy. The former Indiana standout said he already feels like a Raider rather than a newcomer, having spent the past several weeks studying the playbook installed by offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. He added, “Every day, it’s more and more reps that I get, I feel like the whole team improves. The more work you put out there on the field, the more beneficial for everybody.”
