Eleven people died in a fire at a foster care facility in Algiers, Algeria's capital, on Thursday, according to the country's civil protection department. Nineteen others were injured in the blaze, which firefighters were still battling at 06:50 local time (05:50 GMT). Authorities did not disclose the ages of the victims.
During the incident, five individuals with special needs were "taken into care and transported to a safe location," the civil protection department said.
Algeria has been under a heatwave for several days, with the AFP news agency reporting roughly 1,000 fires recorded in the region over the past week.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited two hospitals in Algiers to see those injured in the fire, and an accompanying image showed him beside a child in a hospital bed.
