Defense leads the way as UNLV football wins at Hawaii By Ray Brewer Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026 | 7:45 a.m. UNLV’s defense dominated the contest Saturday night in Honolulu, limiting the Rainbow Warriors to just two field goals and 294 total yards. The Rebels secured a 21‑6 victory, marking their fourth straight win in the Ninth Island Showdown. The triumph carried added significance as the Mountain West opener for both squads. Hawaii had been projected as one of the toughest obstacles standing between UNLV and a fourth consecutive league title appearance. After surrendering a halftime lead the previous week against Memphis, the Rebels could not afford to start the season 0‑2. Safety Tre Fulton spearheaded the effort with 12 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. He also broke up a play in the end zone that had initially been ruled a touchdown; the call was overturned, denying Hawaii its first home score since 2023. The performance represented Hawaii’s lowest‑scoring output versus UNLV since 1974. It also marked the first time UNLV has won consecutive games in Hawaii in a series dating back to the 1960s. “We battled it out, with a small bend, but don’t break,” UNLV coach Dan Mullen said in a statement, calling it a “gutsy win.” “We made plays we needed to win the game at the end, and I thought that was fantastic.” On offense, UNLV accumulated 248 rushing yards, highlighted by a 50‑yard touchdown run by Jai’Den Thomas in the fourth quarter that sealed the win. Quarterback Jackson Arnold contributed 89 rushing yards and two touchdowns, frequently lowering his shoulder to gain extra yards. His passing was modest—8 of 18 for limited yardage—while Rebel receivers dropped at least two catchable balls. Nevertheless, the night belonged to the defense. UNLV recorded five sacks, seven tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and an interception by Quandarius Keyes. The unit also broke up seven passes, holding Hawaii’s Michael Alejado—the league’s preseason offensive player of the year—to 17 completions on 41 attempts for 146 yards, arguably his worst collegiate outing. UNLV now prepares to travel to North Texas for next week’s matchup.
