Bangkok roads submerged as flood disaster declared A flood emergency has been declared across Bangkok after 48 hours of relentless rainfall left large parts of the Thai capital underwater. Residents have been urged to remain indoors, while those living near the city’s network of canals were advised to move belongings to higher floors. Thunderstorms are typical for this time of year, but extreme weather in recent days has overwhelmed Bangkok’s drainage system, snarling traffic on roads already notorious for congestion. Forecasters say the rain is expected to continue into Sunday, raising concerns that additional canals could overflow their banks. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67‑year‑old who lives adjacent a canal just north of central Bangkok, told the AFP news agency: "The h2o keeps coming in. It's hard to spell retired now. It's similar astatine my waist level now." He added, "I cannot spell anywhere. I person been closing my store for 2 days now." Somkid also said water levels in the metropolis appeared to be worse than those seen in 2011, when Bangkok suffered nationwide flooding. Hundreds of people died across Thailand during that three‑month ordeal, though no casualties have been reported in Bangkok from the current inundation. The Thai Meteorological Service predicts more heavy rainfall through the week, although the low‑pressure system driving the recent downpours is forecast to shift toward central Thailand. All 50 of Bangkok’s districts have been designated emergency zones. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the eastern side of the city has borne the brunt of the flooding, as reported by AFP. He continued: "The rainfall keeps falling and we are doing our best. We are trying to pump the h2o out, but the h2o successful canals are full...
