A’s reportedly focusing on 3 candidates for GM job

The Oakland Athletics are reportedly narrowing their search for a general manager to three candidates, USA Today said on Sunday. One of the individuals under consideration is Mike Rizzo, who served as the Washington Nationals’ general manager from 2009 through 2025 and oversaw the club’s 2019 World Series championship. Rizzo was dismissed after the Nationals posted a 37‑53 record during his final season. He has also expressed interest in the Houston Astros’ GM vacancy, although that organization has not yet begun interviews, according to the same report. Billy Owens, an assistant general manager with the Athletics who has worked as a scout and manager since 1999, received a formal interview for the position. James Click, the Toronto Blue Jays’ vice president of shot strategy, is reportedly being considered but has not yet been interviewed. The Athletics’ GM role became available on Aug. 7 when David Forst agreed to part ways with the team, ending a 27‑year tenure with the franchise. Forst guided Oakland to three playoff appearances over his 11 seasons as general manager, though the team won only a single series during that span. The club’s most successful campaigns under Forst came in 2018 and 2019, when Oakland recorded 97‑win seasons each year. Forst is credited with assembling the current roster that includes emerging players Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers and Jacob Wilson. While the search for a permanent replacement continues, assistant general manager Dan Feinstein is handling the duties on an interim basis. The Athletics, which plan to relocate to Las Vegas and open a new ballpark on the Strip in 2028, have not posted a winning record since the 2021 season. Multiple outlets have noted that Forst and his family were reluctant to move to Nevada.
