The Cup Series Chase arrives at its midpoint this week, marking the second straight playoff event backed by a casino sponsor. The South Point Hotel, Casino, & Spa is presenting the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which constitutes the fifth of ten races in the Chase postseason.
The week will carry a bittersweet tone for Las Vegas native Kyle Busch, who is slated to receive multiple honors throughout the schedule. Streets surrounding the speedway are being renamed, and organizers anticipate emotional tributes. Rowdy Road and Busch Brothers Drive will become two permanent thoroughfares adjacent to the venue.
Transporters are logging additional mileage over the coming weeks as the series shifts from Las Vegas to Charlotte before returning to the desert for the season’s second Phoenix visit. This Las Vegas stop represents the series’ second appearance at the track this year; the Pennzoil 400 held in mid‑March was claimed by Denny Hamlin.
All sixteen drivers who qualified for the Chase will compete for the championship through the remainder of the postseason. Under the revised points structure, each competitor’s total was reset to a range between 2,100 and 2,000 points. Current standings read as follows:
- Kyle Larson – 2,282
- Denny Hamlin – 2,256
- Christopher Bell – 2,232
- Joey Logano – 2,215
- Ryan Blaney – 2,191
- Ty Gibbs – 2,188
- Tyler Reddick – 2,171
- Chase Briscoe – 2,159
- Austin Cindric – 2,142
- Bubba Wallace – 2,142
- Carson Hocevar – 2,132
- William Byron – 2,124
- Chase Elliott – 2,121
- Ryan Preece – 2,109
- Chris Buescher – 2,096
- Daniel Suarez – 2,095
Larson has peaked late in the season, delivering a clean sweep at Kansas that included the race victory, Stage 1 and Stage 2 wins, the most laps led, and the fastest lap. He now owns four top‑five finishes and two victories in the Chase, although he did not capture any regular‑season event. Cindric advanced in the standings with a second‑place finish, yet Hamlin retained his hold on second place after a third‑place result.
During the regular season, race wins were distributed as follows: Reddick (5), Hamlin (4), Blaney (3), Chase Elliott (2), Shane van Gisbergen (2), Corey Heim (2), Gibbs (2), Logano (2), Suarez, Hocevar, Briscoe, and Preece. Preece’s triumph eliminated van Gisbergen’s playoff berth, arriving at a pivotal moment.
After missing a winning opportunity at Bristol due to unfortunate circumstances, Blaney secured his second top‑five finish of the Chase, moving ahead of Gibbs into fifth position.
Because Las Vegas hosts a twice‑a‑year date, analysts have accumulated a substantial data set. Hamlin’s spring victory marked his third win in the last ten races, accompanied by one extra top‑five finish and seven total top‑10 finishes. The week may favor Larson to maintain momentum; he has amassed 437 points over his past ten Vegas appearances, which include two wins, five top‑five finishes, and eight top‑10 finishes. Joey Logano remains the only other driver with multiple victories across that span.
Byron pairs a win with five top‑five finishes and seven top‑10 results over his last ten starts, suggesting he could climb the rankings. For long‑shot considerations, Alex Bowman recorded a win at the track, while Ross Chastain tallies five top‑five finishes and six top‑10 outcomes.
