Brendan O'Carroll, star and creator of the sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys, announced in an Instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/p/DcIxQ4SowjP/) on Monday that the planned 2026 Christmas and New Year specials have been cancelled after suffering a broken jaw.
He wrote: "It is with sincere regret I must announce that due to an unexpected medical issue I will have to cancel the recordings of the 2026 Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas and New Year's Specials."
A CT scan revealed that he had 2 fractures in his mandible (jaw) which requires immediate surgery and a few months recovery, as he stated: "Following a CT scan, it was found that I had 2 fractures in my mandible (jaw) which requires immediate surgery and a few months recovery."
O'Carroll added that he has been "talking with the BBC about getting Mrs. Brown's Boys back on the screen in 2027".
The long‑running comedy, filmed at BBC Scotland’s studios in Glasgow, first aired in 2011 with O'Carroll portraying the foul‑mouthed Irish matriarch Agnes Brown.
Despite frequent criticism, the series remains a ratings favourite and has collected multiple comedy awards at the National Television Awards.
