In the meantime, the Las Vegas Valley offers dozens upon dozens of art galleries, several dedicated art museums and a surprising number of pieces by world‑renowned “blue chip” artists tucked away from casino floors. If your exposure to museums and galleries is limited to the Instagram‑friendly variety (the Museum of Ice Cream, Arte Museum and Museum of Illusions are undeniably fun), you may not fully appreciate the contemplative pleasure of viewing art with intention. Your phone usually stays in your pocket, but to truly engage with a work you want to remember or to catch an unexpected detail, you rely only on your eyes. Standing just far enough—or sometimes just too close—to a piece, you try to get inside it, which is really about the art entering your mind and figuring you out. When you settle into that dialogue between yourself and the artwork, you can easily spend an hour—or an entire afternoon—trying to understand art, being challenged by art, flirting with art, letting stimulating art wash over your thoughts. Strong art offers many entry points; great art provides all those entrances but only one exit, and your thoughts won’t rest until you’ve located that exit. Perhaps you should snap a photo, take it home and analyze the piece in overtime. The Valley already hosts a proper art museum at UNLV, the Marjorie Barrick. It features an Arts District anchored by the Arts Factory and Art Square. Libraries throughout the area house galleries, including one at the Sahara West Library that rivals many museums in scale. There is a whole museum devoted to the work of a single artist, Rita Deanin Abbey. Moreover, several Strip properties—most notably CityCenter, the Cosmopolitan, Fontainebleau and Bellagio—display artworks that any museum in the world would be eager to acquire. The Arts District also clusters several strong galleries, such as Recycled Propaganda (recycledpropaganda.com), all within walking distance of one another. **Museums** The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art at UNLV (unlv.edu/barrickmuseum) is the place to encounter art while engaging with the communities that shape artists. The Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum (ritadeaninabbeymuseum.org) presents its namesake in full: paintings, sculptures and mixed‑media works.
