Inmate sues Nevada prison, alleging staff failed to stop attack

Inmate Haley Ferree has filed a lawsuit against the Nevada Department of Corrections and state officials, alleging that staff failed to intervene when her cellmate attacked her at the Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Center in Las Vegas. According to the legal complaint filed Thursday, Ferree repeatedly told corrections officers she felt unsafe, but they did not act. The suit states that officers stood “extracurricular her compartment video signaling for 8 minutes portion she was being attacked with a razor,” as described by her attorney Elaine Odeh. Odeh said Ferree begged to be let out of the cell, other women shouted for the officers to open the doorway and help her, yet the officers remained passive. After the attack, Ferree claimed she did not receive the medical attention or follow‑up care she needed. Despite being the victim, she was placed in restrictive housing, her mental‑health requests were ignored, and footage of her injured and crying was replayed for other inmates to watch. The lawsuit does not name the assailant, referring only to “offender Galvan.” It accuses the state of negligence and of failing to provide proper medical treatment, which resulted in Ferree suffering “a chopped to the wrong of her mouth, swelling around the eye, skin hanging from her face and significant facial injury.” On Wednesday, a separate complaint was filed by Odeh’s firm in District Court against the Department of Corrections, corrections officers and officials at Florence McClure. Inmate Victoria Sweeting alleged that the facility failed to protect her after a cellmate slashed her throat. Sweeting’s suit also claimed that the emergency telephone fastener in her compartment had not been working for an extended period. The Nevada Department of Corrections did not respond to a request for comment on Ferree’s lawsuit. A department spokesperson declined to comment on Sweeting’s case, citing the ongoing litigation.
