Coronado boys soccer team forced to vacate its 2025 Class 5A state championship, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book.
The team had defeated Hug 2‑1 in November to claim what would have been its third straight 5A title, but the NIAA boys soccer record lists the 2025 championship as “vacated.”
Coronado head coach Dustin Barton said Thursday that the program has moved on from the decision and that he and the school have no further comment.
The NIAA declined to explain why Coronado’s title was vacated. An NIAA spokesperson stated, “The NIAA does not comment on any actions taken toward its member schools. Those communications are between the NIAA and the school(s),” in an email.
Coronado finished the 2025 season with a 25‑0 record. Its victory in the previous year’s final gave the team a 55‑match winning streak, a state record. The NIAA’s list of most consecutive matches without a loss does not reflect that streak; it notes only the program’s 30‑game unbeaten run from the end of the 2023 season through 2024.
On Wednesday, Palo Verde beat Coronado 2‑1, handing the Cougars their first on‑field loss since 2023. Coronado entered that game with a 59‑game unbeaten streak (58‑0‑1).
During the 2024 campaign Coronado scored a state‑record 181 goals while outscoring opponents 181‑12. That 181‑goal total is not entered in the state record book, and the Cougars recorded 14 shutouts.
This offseason the squad graduated nine starters and much of the core that fueled its three‑year dominance. The NIAA record book shows its most recent update was in May 2026, several months after Coronado secured the title.
For Coronado this is the second vacating within a single school year that has affected playoff teams. In May the Coronado baseball squad was withdrawn from the Class 5A Southern Region tournament bracket. No reason was provided by the NIAA or the school for the removal.
After losing an opening‑round baseball game and falling to the losers bracket, Coronado’s positions were replaced with the notation “Vacant.”
