British climber dies after falling 60m on Spanish mountainside

A 28‑year‑old British climber died after falling roughly 60 metres (200 feet) on a mountainside in northern Spain, the Spanish Civil Guard said. The incident occurred on Thursday while the man was descending from the summit of Torrecerredo in the Cantabrian Mountains. Emergency services received the call at about 13:45 local time (11:45 GMT). Police and an air unit were dispatched to the area, and a mountain rescue team recovered the climber’s body and belongings. The UK Foreign Office said it was in interaction with local authorities "following reports of the death of a British national in Spain". According to the Civil Guard, two mountain specialists were lowered by winch to the accident site on the east face of the mountain. The climber’s identity has not been released, although Spanish authorities described him as English. The mishap happened when he was approximately 20 metres from the summit. His body has been taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Asturias, which provides forensic pathology services, the Civil Guard added. Torrecerredo rises to about 2,650 metres and lies within the Picos de Europa, a popular destination for climbers and walkers. Separately, Sepa Asturias, the agency responsible for emergency services in the region, reported that it also transported a 54‑year‑old French woman to hospital after she suffered a limb injury on the mountain range on Thursday afternoon.
