A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought close to 40% of Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

A consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired roughly 38 percent of Liverpool Football Club from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s majority owner. Early reports had suggested the stake was about a third, but later clarification from The Athletic placed the figure at nearly 38 percent, described in the original wording as “adjacent to 40 percent.” The agreement also contains an option for the consortium to pursue a controlling interest in Liverpool within the next 12 months, although the arrangement does not constitute a binding commitment. In a statement issued on Friday, FSG confirmed it had entered into a “definitive agreement” for the sale of a “strategic minority investment” to 1892 Holdings. The investing group – named after Liverpool’s founding year, 1892 – is led by British‑Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Bezos and Facebook co‑founder Eduardo Saverin. Bhatia is set to become Liverpool’s vice‑chairman and join an expanded board, pending regulatory approval. He is the son‑in‑law of Indian industrialist Lakshmi Mittal and previously served as manager and co‑owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before stepping away from that role last month. Analysts value the transaction at between £5 billion and £6 billion for the club.
